THIS BOOK is a biography of Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar, an active social worker and politician of the 20th century. Attracted by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, she joined the freedom struggle and worked for the Congress movement. Subsequently, she was drawn towards the self-respect movement and worked with great fervour under the leadership of Periyar E.V.R.

In her later years, she took part in the political programmes of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). She fought heroically for the uplift of women and she, along with Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddi, stood in the forefront of the crusade against the ‘Devadasi’ system. She played a prominent role in the anti-Hindi agitation. In a fitting tribute to Moovalur Ammaiyar’s memory, the Tamil Nadu government headed by M. Karunanidhi has named its ‘marriage assistance programme for the poor’ after her.

The author has presented, in 17 chapters, an impressive and well written biographical account of Moovalur Ammaiyar, and the publication testifies to the enormous effort that has gone into it. The four appendices contain material that is quite relevant and immensely useful. The book may well serve as a powerful tool in the hands of those seriously engaged in working for the empowerment of women.(ஹிந்து௧0 .௧௧. 2009 )
